Here we are, a year has passed and we're in the gas fireplace season again. We're just getting started and every fireplace company is very busy!
I thought I would share just a few things that I'm seeing that are potentially very dangerous and confirms that gas fireplaces need to be serviced yearly for a safe burning season.
One thing I see a lot of is neglect. For example when I can't see the fire burning because the glass is so dirty that I can't see through it, this poses a problem. It is important that one can see the fire burning in the gas appliance. Without being able to see it you can't tell if it's burning correctly or not. I find venting problems that causes the flame to pull towards the intake vent when burning. The fire can also lift off of the burner. This is called ghosting and it isn't very safe at all.
Another thing I highly recommend is good a good CO detector. Not only should one have a good detector, but it also needs to be placed properly. CO doesn't coagulate in corners, behind furniture or at the floor. Be sure to read the instructions that come with a CO detector and follow them closely.
These are just a couple of things that will help to keep you safe this winter season when using your gas fireplace, and the list goes on!
