Westminster Colorado has had a very warm winter in the 2012/2013 season. Most of us are not running our furnaces as much, which saves us a lot of money in heating costs. However we do get some cold days and evenings when we are running our furnaces. There are things we can do to bring down our our heating bill even more. Here are some bullet points.
- Change your filter monthly
- Use a programmable thermostat
- Have your furnace serviced yearly
- Turn you ceiling fan on to rotate backwards
- Turn your thermostat to 68 degrees
Now let's look at these suggestions one at a time;
First, changing your filter monthly will allow for good air-flow. The better the air-flow, the better your appliances will heat and cool your home. It will also help save on costly repair bills, as many furnace repairs we do are related to dirt and dust. Therefore the less dust and dirt build up in a furnace, the longer it will last, with fewer repairs.
Secondly, using a programmable thermostat will help to keep your house warm when you are home, and keep your furnace running as little as possible when your not home, thus saving you money.
Thirdly, keeping your furnace serviced will help to keep it running at it's peak performance. The more efficiently it heats your home the more savings you will have when it's running.
Fourthly, keeping your ceiling fan running backwards will pull the heat down form the ceiling and bring the heat down to the floor area where you live. This will keep you feeling more comfortable, and make your furnace run less.
The last suggestion is up to personal preference. Some people do not like their home at 68 degrees, but leaving your thermostat at 68 degrees will save you money.
